This recipe conjures up festive memories of wandering around Christmas markets, where the warm, spicy aroma of mulled cider fill the air. Easy to make, and just as warming, this drink is perfect for toasting the season with friends and family.

  • 1.5 litres cloudy apple juice
  • Zest 1 orange
  • 3–4 cinnamon sticks
  • 4 whole cloves
  • ¼ teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg

Method
  1. Pour the apple juice into a pan and warm over a low heat.
  2. Add the orange zest, cinnamon sticks, cloves and nutmeg.
  3. Stir and bring to the boil.
  4. Gently simmer for 5 minutes.
  5. Pour through a metal sieve to remove the whole spices.
  6. Serve in mugs for a winter warmer!
