Taking great strides to prevent cancer

19 March 2018

Keen runner Justine Matthews from Ashington will be running the London Landmarks Half Marathon on Sunday 25 March in aid of the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF).

A loyal member of Foxy Ladies Running Club in Findon, near Worthing, Justine, 47, has strong motivations for raising money for WCRF's cancer prevention and survival work.

"I lost my mum to endometrial cancer, and a good friend to bowel cancer, so I wanted to run for them but I'm also running alongside a friend who has had breast cancer", she says. "We want this half marathon to be a celebration of her recovery."

Justine was drawn to support WCRF because, as she puts it, "the charity is all about early knowledge, cancer prevention and the importance of nutrition and lifestyle. If we all had more awareness about how to help ourselves, then perhaps we wouldn't see so many of our loved ones succumbing to this cruel disease."

The London Landmarks Half Marathon is taking place for the first time this year. This brand new, closed road central London run will go through both the City of London and City of Westminster. 10,000 runners will start at Pall Mall and end at Downing Street, taking in some of London's most iconic landmarks, from Big Ben and the St Paul's Cathedral to the Shard and the London Eye.

Commenting on her decision to run in the event for World Cancer Research Fund, Justine said: "I've been running with Foxy Ladies for the past few years, but I've never undertaken such a big challenge. I really believe in the principles behind WCRF's work, and by pushing myself I know I'm helping others."

Gerard Cousins, Director of Fundraising at World Cancer Research Fund, said: "We're incredibly grateful to Justine for her fantastic support. It's thanks to the amazing efforts of people like her that we can continue to help the public make more informed lifestyle choices to reduce their risk of cancer."
