Eat less salt

It is well known that a diet high in salt is linked to high blood pressure, but many people are unaware that it can also increase the risk of stomach cancer. Scientists think this might be because salt damages the lining of the stomach. Every year, an estimated 14 per cent of stomach cancer cases in the UK could be prevented if everyone ate no more than 6g of salt a day.1

As a nation, we consume an average of 8.6g salt per day – 2.6g above the recommended daily maximum of 6g. Salt is a common ingredient in many everyday foods such as bread, cheese, cereals, soups and cooking sauces. Around 75 per cent of our daily salt intake comes from these processed foods, so along with the advice to avoid adding salt when cooking and at the table, it is important to urge people to check food labels when shopping and choose low-salt options. Foods low in salt contain no more than 0.3g of salt per 100g, and appear green on traffic light labelling.
