The Infant & Toddler Forum Study Day
Institute of Child Health, London
About the study day: It brought together a multidisciplinary team of experts who shared a common professional interest in infant and toddler nutrition. The Infant & Toddler Forum aims to provide and improve the access of healthcare professionals to reliable, up-to-date, evidence-based information on infant and toddler nutrition.
Key topics:
- Policies, targets and strategies to halt obesity
- Early nutrition affects later health – the weight issue
- The psychology of eating - the early years
- Early nutrition and children’s behaviour, learning and mood
- Early nutrition and Dental Health
- Positive programming: Healthy eating for toddlers
Highlights:
- The Infant & Toddler Forum is specifically interested in obesity because food preferences and eating habits are set up in the first years of life and are more difficult to change after this period. Early exposure (before the age of 6 months) to fruits and vegetables predicts consumption of fruits and vegetables at age 7 years (Coulthard, Harris, Emmett & Northstone. In press, Maternal & Child Nutrition, Jan. 2009). Therefore, weaning practices and early feeding practices will contribute to later childhood diet, and possibly to childhood obesity.
- The Government response to the increasing trend of obesity: Healthy Schools Programme, Healthy Start, Family Nurse Partnership Programme, Child Health Promotion Programme and ‘Healthy Weight, Healthy Lives’ . Evaluation is generally haphazard or non-existent. Engagement is important: public health messages are seen as a criticism of parenting ability. Toddler years are an ideal time for families to make lifestyle choices to prevent childhood obesity (healthy eating, increased physical activity, limited sedentary behaviours and positive routines).
- 1 in 3 obese 3-5 year olds will become obese adults (Serdula, 1993). Recommendations for Carers/Parents. Diet – regular family meals, breakfast and no TV whilst eating. Activity – active play, less TV, family activity and sport.
- Appropriate nutrition is essential for the growth and development of brains and bodies. At least 39 essential nutrients must be provided by our food, but many of these are lacking from modern diets. Children’s food choices that are not healthy affect the way their brains develop and function, so the issues are not just about obesity and poor physical health. Nutrition affects mental health and performance throughout life, so it’s worth getting the basics right.
- In the UK, 44 per cent of children have decay by age 5 years and less than 10% have it treated. Preventing caries requires good brushing (twice daily, after breakfast and after last food and drink at night), fluoride and reducing the frequency of sugar intake.
