Lifestyle and cancer advice published
November 30, 2007

A cancer charity has followed up the launch of its landmark cancer prevention report by publishing advice the general public can use to help put its recommendations into practice.

The World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) publication is aimed at letting people know how making small changes to their lifestyle can make a real difference to their cancer risk.

The booklet – called Recommendations for Cancer Prevention – explains the science in plain English and also gives practical tips on how people can incorporate the recommendations into their daily lives.

To celebrate its launch, WCRF is offering free copies to the first 1,000 people who call 020 7343 4205 and quote the code “Recs Dec07”. A PDF of the booklet is also available to download from the charity’s website at www.wcrk-uk.org

Lisa Cooney, Head of Education for WCRF, said: “This booklet offers practical advice about how people can make lifestyle choices that can reduce their risk of developing cancer later in life.

“It also gets across the message that our cancer prevention recommendations are not a question of all or nothing, but are instead an ideal to work towards if you are concerned about cancer.

“Take the recommendation on processed meat, for example. If you don’t want to cut out eating processed meat altogether, then you can still make a positive difference by cutting down on the amount you eat.

“But while this booklet offers valuable advice, it is important to emphasise that we are not telling anyone to do anything. We are sharing science-based information that empowers individuals to make choices that can affect their cancer risk, because research shows that cancer is a largely preventable disease.”
