| Beat the Christmas shopping snack attack |
December 12, 2007
|
Healthy eating can all go to pot when you’re Christmas shopping.
With all those fast food outlets, coffee shops and sandwich bars on the high street, how do you resist the temptation to tuck in?
Nathalie Winn, World Cancer Research Fund’s nutritionist, has come up with five easy ways to beat the high street snack attack.
Drink plenty of water. Hunger is often thirst in disguise and water makes a no calorie alternative to sugary drinks.
Opt for low fat mayo and wholemeal bread instead of white bread when buying sandwiches. Wholemeal bread has a higher fibre content, releasing energy slowly as it digests and helping you feel fuller for longer.
Pack a piece of fruit. Then when you’re craving a sugar rush, you’re less likely to reach for the chocolate.
Grab a cappuccino with fat-free milk. A cappuccino contains only two-thirds of the calories of a latte and less than half the calories of a mocha.*
Take time out to tuck in. You’re more likely to over-indulge if you wait until you’re starving before you eat. It’s also easier to keep track of how much you’ve eaten if you take a proper meal break rather than snacking along the way.
WCRF have copies of their booklet ‘Recommendations for Cancer Prevention’ to giveaway to the first 50 people to call 020 7343 4205 and quote RECS JAN08.

About WCRF
World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) raises awareness that cancer is largely preventable and helps people make choices to reduce their chances of developing the disease.
This includes research into how cancer risk is related to diet, physical activity, and weight management, and education programmes that highlight the fact that about a third of cancers could be prevented through changes to lifestyle. For more information on the charity’s work, visit www.wcrf-uk.org
The WCRF report, called Food, Nutrition, Physical Activity, and the Prevention of Cancer: a Global Perspective, was launched in November 2007 and is the most comprehensive report ever published on the link between cancer and lifestyle. For more information, visit www.dietandcancerreport.org
