"It seems that these days there isn't a single person who doesn't know someone who has, or has had cancer.

This horrible disease seems to circle my family. Recently, I received the devastating news that my sister Karen has mouth cancer. It was even more of a shock, because she doesn't smoke and barely drinks. She had to undergo a traumatic 12 hour operation - which included removing a portion of her tongue - and now has the horrors of radiotherapy to look forward to. Luckily, she's a very strong woman and it seems she will make a full recovery.

This all came on the tail end of my uncle being diagnosed with terminal cancer. And my brother in-laws's sister, who is also terminal, has been battling the disease for several years. My Nan had it, but refused to let it take her. She is an inspiration to us all.

Even my cat has it, and probably won’t live to see another year, which is heartbreaking. We've had Pepsi since I was a child and it the sweetest cat you could ever hope to meet.

I feel so useless as I watch cancer slowly rip my family apart. All I can do is this run (and hopefully many more to come) to help raise money to support cancer prevention research. I do it in the hope that others don't have to go through the same pain that we are, and to show my family that I love them dearly with actions rather than words.

Please, please show your support and let's beat this disease together."
