British Summer Fruits
British Summer Fruits is proud to be supporting ‘Fruity Friday’ 2006. British Summer Fruits is the UK body dedicated to the promotion of British-grown soft and stone fruits, including raspberries, redcurrents and plums. The body is made up of leading soft fruit suppliers who represent the majority of British growers and accounts for over 92% of all homegrown fruits sold in the UK’s leading supermarkets.
Berries are a great way to reach the FIVE A DAY goal. A handful of strawberries or raspberries counts as one portion and can be added to smoothies, sprinkled on desserts or eaten on its own as a refreshing snack. They make a tasty contribution to a healthy and balanced diet.
Three key initiatives will take place on Fruity Friday. These are:
Volunteers will be handing out free punnets of delicious, healthy strawberries at several London Underground stations including Tottenham Court Road and Piccadilly Circus.
All UK primary schools will be encouraged to take part in a national competition to design a poster showcasing healthy eating and/or taking more exercise. British Summer Fruits will be giving the three winners of the ‘Fruity Friday Poster Competition’ a visit to a berry farm with his or her entire class.
A targeted editorial programme with national and regional print media and radio stations to promote the benefits of eating more berries as part of a healthy diet.
Laurence Olins, Chairman of British Summer Fruits, said: “British Summer Fruits is delighted to support WCRF in their very worthwhile cause. Everything we do to promote our fruits is aimed at informing and reassuring consumers how good berries are for them. Working together gives us access to consumers of all ages – from primary school children to commuters. The anti-cancer message is important, and ‘Fruity Friday’ is going to be a key day in our calendar, but the programme of education for both WCRF and British Summer Fruits is ongoing and stretches far beyond this.”

Recycle for Research - Mobile Phone Recycling
In the UK alone, an estimated 15 million mobile phone handsets are discarded every year, over 100 million are hidden away and fewer than
10% recycled.
For every mobile phone recycled, ShP solutions, our mobile phone recycling partner, will make a donation to World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF UK) of between 50p and £50, dependent on make and model.
Every mobile phone you recycle for WCRF UK will be helping to fund innovative scientific research into cancer prevention as well as an extensive national education programme.
For example, just £5 would enable us to place 40 of our life-saving cancer prevention leaflets in doctors' surgeries waiting rooms.
Please help and donate that unwanted mobile phone. All you have to do is simply pop your old handset in an envelope, marked clearly that you are supporting WCRF UK, and post to: FREEPOST, ShP Solutions, Lancaster.
Alternatively, to be sent a freepost recycling envelope call freephone 0800 970 1461 or email recycling@wcrf.org.
