Mark Bowman
Mark Bowman, a small business owner in Liverpool, as well as a sales person for Orange, is ready to take part in his first ever marathon, and the London Marathon is a magical one to experience. Please wish Mark the best of luck with the challenge he has set himself by sponsoring him generously below.
"For the people who know me, they may be a tad confused or surprised so I hope that this page explains a little about why I have decided to run the London Marathon especially being nearly 30 and not having run anything more than 7 or 8 miles in one go. Maybe its because I am feeling less disciplined than I used to, maybe its the sense of self achievement that I will get crossing the line, how proud I would feel of myself when handing over all the money I know I could raise for a disease related charity that effected me as a kid, or its simply to improve my health.
One point in the above sentence that may have caught your eye is that a certain disease had a major impact on me growing up. My mother lost a long hard battle against cancer during my early teens; she suffered for almost 5 years with treatments, hospital and GP appointments, operations and visits by nurses. I have seen first hand how cancer can wreck a person beyond belief and take away their whole sole to a point where you can’t recognise them anymore. It takes life slowly, bit by bit, an organ at a time often with intolerable amounts of pain.
She died September 1993 just as I started my GCSE's, and it tore my dad, my brother and myself apart and these became the hardest years of my life to date. Looking back it was time of pain, loss, emptiness and worry for my family, something that no 13 year should ever have to endure. Although I feel that it has shaped me as a person, made me strong, independent, I don’t think that a horrible disease like cancer should be able to stand in the way of a person’s natural life path. I grew up at a point in my life without someone that everyone needs, someone to look after you, make you do your homework, tell you off when you have been bad and although my dad was great at that its a double act between mums and dads that makes a bigger impact on you.
It’s just passed 15 years and it’s taken until now to start my fund raising efforts for this cause. I can’t really explain why it’s taken so long, maybe I have always felt it’s too difficult, but for some reason on reflection of the past 15 years it seems like the right thing to do and I now feel 100% comfortable. The main point to come out of this is that I don’t think anyone at any stage of life should be subject to what happened to me and my family and if I can help in anyway to prevent this then that would give me more satisfaction than anything else in the world. So for this reason I need to raise a minimum of £3000 for the World Cancer research Fund (WCRF) by running the London Marathon.
Any amount of money you can afford, especially during the credit crunch will be great. For those of you who would like to donate to my cause and would like to know more about reasons behind why I am doing this then please feel free to chat to me at anytime. My mother was a beautiful, kind, happy person who always put everyone else first before herself so she deserves to be talked about and I am more than happy to do that with any of you.” |
