Sue Boerrigter
Have you ever dreamed of starting your day with a brisk walk through the moors? Our spring 2008 Supporter of the Quarter, Sue Boerrigter, did just that and in doing so raised about £1,000 in sponsorship for WCRF UK.
Instead of collecting gifts for her landmark 60th birthday, she wrote to friends and family encouraging them to sponsor her Dales Way hike from Ilkley to Bowness, Windemere (82 miles!).
Sue believes in the importance of cancer prevention, so WCRF UK’s work in funding cancer prevention research made it the ideal charity for her to support: “Many of us have already lost loved ones to this dreadful disease. We will all, I’m sure, know someone who has cancer now or is in remission. My mother died from lung cancer in 1972. Since then I have lost an uncle and four very good friends.
Sue’s birthday challenge turned into an epic adventure: “I was soaked through to the skin when it rained relentlessly for a 36-hour stint. And then sunburnt on the very long 18-mile final stretch, which was one of the hottest days of that year. But I enjoyed it all and am looking forward to my next challenge!”
